Section of Pathology

The Section of Pathology is committed to the better understanding of the causes, diagnosis and treatment of human disease through a strong reputation in basic and translational research, clinical practice and teaching.

The work of the Section is divided into basic sciences (researching the causes of cancer and age-related diseases), the development of imaging technologies; and diagnostic pathology, providing key services in the conventional and molecular diagnosis of disease, especially cancer.

The Section also has a major annual commitment to the teaching of both undergraduate and postgraduate students in the School of Medicine, including:

  • contribution to the BSc in Cellular and Molecular Pathology;
  • organisation of a Year 2 SSC “Pathology in Action - See if for Yourself”

The Section also plays host to a number of externally funded PhD research students who have contributed to the progress of basic research.

Achievements in research

This powerful, internationally competitive group provides an excellent basis for liaison with the translational and clinical researchers at Cardiff and elsewhere. The aims are to develop new therapeutics from the information accrued. Importantly, it provides a focus for attracting further cancer research scientists of the highest international repute to Wales.
