Oncology & Palliative Medicine

Oncology and Palliative Medicine is based at Velindre Hospital. It is active across the full spectrum of non-surgical cancer treatment, from curative therapy to palliative care.

There are two laboratory groups; one is housed in the Metastasis and Angiogenesis Research Group, and the other, based at Velindre Hospital, is focused on cancer immunology. There are also strong links to other laboratory groups in Cardiff University (Biosciences, School of Pharmacy), and to Departments of Surgical Oncology in the School of Medicine (Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology).

Special areas of clinical and laboratory research interest include Urological, Colorectal and Breast Cancers, Optimisation of palliative therapy, Thromboembolism in Cancer, and Evidence-Based Medicine. The Department hosts the Wales Cancer Trials Network, the Wales Cancer Bank and the Wales Cancer Trials Unit. The Department also hosts personnel from the National Collaborating Centre for Cancer, the official arm of the National Institute for Clinical Excellence which is responsible for the development of cancer service guidance for the NHS. The Department runs a number of teaching activities, foremost among which are the Diploma in Paliative Medicine and the Undergaduate Oncology teaching project.
